FaceTime & Duo should be less about video calls, and more about creating distributed home movies with remote family. Why no record feature?
I assume there's some sort of legal constraint?

It seems like ephemeral video conversations are commodities allowing for easy migration of customers from one app/service to another.

Introducing persistent, recorded conversations locks customers in to the product that contains access to those memories/artifacts.
Seems like a win for the first provider of that feature. It's why its difficult for me to see a mass exodus from Instagram vis-à-vis photos.
And it's why olds like me are still stuck on Flickr.
